The TOEFL exam stands alongside IELTS as 'the' exams of English. Recognized throughout the world, its main purpose is to provide access to universities and other institutes, also employment in certain industries, and also for immigration into English speaking countries.
The exam is in a similar format to IELTS, and comprises the 4 elements of speaking, reading, listening, and writing. The main difference being the choice of exam (iBT = internet based test) or (pBT = paper based test).

Usually the test taker will complete the exam over a 4-hour period with a short
break in the middle.
As you can see from the diagram on your right, there is a variety of different sub-test types within each element.
